Supplements Aren't Shortcuts: Using Science to Amplify, Not Avoid, the Work

We’re living in the golden age of wellness—everywhere you look, there’s a new supplement, superfood, or wearable promising more energy, faster weight loss, deeper sleep, or even a longer life. The wellness field has progressed immeasurably since I graduated naturopathic medical school.
And here’s the thing: I still love this stuff - wellness, that is.
I believe deeply in the power of proper supplementation to amplify a healthy lifestyle. I use them. I recommend them. I’ve spent years diving into the science, exploring the synergy between nature and modern research.
But here’s what I won’t do—sell supplements as shortcuts.
Because supplements are tools, not solutions. They’re designed to support a strong foundation, not replace it. And yet, the wellness industry often markets them as magic bullets. “Take this pill and watch the fat melt away.” “Boost your energy instantly—no lifestyle changes required.” “One scoop a day and your metabolism skyrockets.”
It’s tempting. We all want the result without the hard work. But it’s a dangerous narrative because it undermines the truth of what it really takes to create lasting health.
Here’s the reality: no supplement can outwork a poor lifestyle.
You can’t “Omega-3” your way out of a fast-food diet. Ashwagandha won’t fix chronic stress if you refuse to slow down. Magnesium may help with relaxation and constipation—but it can’t undo years of poor sleep habits.
Supplements are like the volume knob on a stereo. They can make the music louder, clearer, more impactful—but there has to be music playing in the first place. If your foundation is shaky—if you’re not eating well, moving regularly, sleeping deeply, or managing stress—then supplements become expensive band-aids, not transformative tools.
The wellness industry loves a promise. It thrives on the idea that you can “hack” your biology—skip the hard parts and still get the results.
And while some protocols and supplements do offer significant benefits, they’re often marketed in isolation, implying you can bypass the essentials.
“This prebiotic will fix your gut health”— but ignores that you’re still eating processed foods.
“This sleep supplement guarantees 8 hours”— but doesn’t mention your late-night screen time or caffeine habit.
“This adaptogen will banish stress”— while you’re still running on burnout, refusing to rest.
It’s like adding premium fuel to a car with flat tires and expecting it to drive smoother.
So, what’s the alternative?
It’s simple, but not always sexy: get the basics right first.
Prioritize whole, nutrient-dense foods. Move your body daily—whether it’s walking, lifting weights, yoga, or dancing in your living room. Get 7–9 hours of quality sleep. Manage stress through practices like breathwork, meditation, or time in nature. Cultivate purpose and connection—because health isn’t just physical; it’s emotional and spiritual, too.
Then, and only then, bring in the supplements that support and enhance those habits.
Here’s where supplements truly shine:
They help fill nutritional gaps. Even the cleanest diets can fall short on key nutrients. Magnesium, Vitamin D, Omega-3s—these are common deficiencies that impact mood, energy, and immune health.
They support stress, sleep, and recovery. Adaptogens like ashwagandha or rhodiola can help balance stress. Magnesium can aid relaxation. But again—only if the bigger stressors are being addressed, too.
They boost performance. Nootropics, amino acids, and targeted micronutrients can enhance cognitive function, athletic performance, and recovery—but they work best when layered onto an already healthy system.
What they can’t do? Replace the hard stuff.
Supplements won’t fix burnout if you’re ignoring your body’s need for rest. They won’t create energy if you’re skipping meals and running on caffeine. And they won’t offer deep healing if you’re only treating surface symptoms.
Before adding another supplement to your cart, pause and ask:
“Am I using this to support the work I’m already doing—or am I hoping it’ll be a shortcut?”
If it’s the former, go for it. The right supplements can absolutely take your health to the next level.
But if it’s the latter—if it’s coming from a place of “I hope this fixes everything”—that’s the moment to check in with your habits, your lifestyle, and your deeper needs.
I’m all for using every tool at our disposal. I believe in leveraging science to amplify energy, longevity, and well-being. But the most powerful “biohack” isn’t in a pill, powder, or protocol—it’s in the daily commitment to showing up for yourself.
Use supplements wisely. Let them support the work—but never let them convince you that they are the work.
The real magic? It’s in the practice.
